An important 12C Tironensian abbey until it was sacked by John Knox and his supporters in 1559. The abbey is believed to have been birthplace of Scottish whisky. Lindores Abbey and Balmerino Abbey are part of the historic pilgrimage paths across Fife from Culross Abbey in the west to St Andrews cathedral in the east.
